Anyway, the other day I had been reading Belinda Olsson's "Raskausjärkytys" (a translated novel), but yesterday I was in the mood to switch on to another one: Khaled Hosseini's "A Thousand Splendid Suns
" (or Tuhat Loistavaa Aurinkoa in Finnish).I'm going slowly, but at least I understand the gist of most of the sentences (the first year I was in Finland, before going on the full-time course, I couldn't even read a page of a children's book in a day). But I try to understand every single word or phrase and there are some words/phrases I don't know, I'll write them down on my notebook and I'll ask R2 or other people in a Finnish forum about them. I also write down new words/phrases/sentences in my notebook. It's a bit messy, but at least I hope it'll help me tremendously in gathering vocabulary and in remembering phrases/short sentences so that I remember better how to use a word/phrase.
So I'm entering the world of Mariam, a 15-year-old "bastard child" of a very powerful man with many wives. She is sent to Kabul to be married with a man 30 years her senior and then 20 years later comes Laila, a young woman who will become Mariam's husband's other wife and friendship will blossom between these two women.
I'm really curious about the plot and the characters. I want to know the ending. I hope I can focus on reading this book so that I can finish it as soon as possible (well, as fast as I can - considering it's in Finnish). We'll see about that!
