What's In A Name?

When my parents were younger (perhaps in their early twenties, I don't remember exactly anymore), they changed their names into Indonesian names officially. So in their original birth certificates, both of them had Chinese names. I know that Dad chose his own first name and surname because he had told us about it a few times and his siblings also used the same surname. Not sure who picked Mom's Indonesian names, though, but Mom has an Indonesian first name, middle name, and surname.

After I was born, my Dad registered my birth and told the official the name he and my Mom had chosen for me, but for some weird reason they didn't put my Dad's (Indo) surname in my birth certificate. The same thing happened to my brother. We're not the only victims, though, because I know so many of my schoolmates and also my brother's schoolmates who don't have any surnames. Our parents did give us middle names, so the middle names stayed in our birth certificate, but some of my schoolmates whose parents didn't give any middle names had only their first names written in their birth certificate.

A funny thing happened when I first applied for a passport back in 2000. In order to apply for a passport, we had to submit our parents' papers, including their birth certificates. When I received my passport, I realized that they had put my Dad's (Indo) surname. Probably because in many other countries, surname is such an important thing.

I remember being called by Ms. (Dad's surname) at the airport in Singapore instead of being called Ms. Amel and I was surprised 'coz I had never used that surname before, so it sounded strange to me. FYI in Indo, normally they call people by their first names, though they'd add the word Mrs. or Mr. for older people or when you need to be polite. And in schools these days sometimes the single female teachers are called Ms. (First name) as well.

In Indonesia when a couple gets married, very rarely does anyone change their names officially so that they use their spouse's surname, although sometimes on some occasions the wife will be called as Mrs. X (for example) --- sometimes this happens when someone invites you to a wedding and on the envelope it'll be written: Mr. and Mrs. X.

Anyway, that's why when I moved to Finland with my residence permit, all my legal paperwork here has my Dad's surname on it, even though it's not written in my birth certificate. I did want to take R2's surname at some point, but it would be such a hassle 'coz then I'd have to change my bank card, ID card, passport, so I haven't done it (I know R2 doesn't mind, either).

I once daydreamed about tracking my ancestors and being able to draw a huge family tree, though it would be very hard to do, because I'm not sure in the old days everything was recorded well enough in the registry office (case in point: my Mom's elder siblings don't know their exact birth dates 'coz my grandparents didn't register their births right away). Besides, my Dad's dad came to Indo from mainland China, whereas my Mom's dad came to Indo from Singapore (dunno if he originated from mainland China as well or if he was born there already), but both my grandmas were born in Indonesia already, though I have no idea about their own parents.

A few weeks ago I watched a TV show about Kim Cattrall's effort to track down her ancestors and it made me daydream of my own ancestors. Who were they? Where did they come from? I may not be able to find out anything about them, but at least I can daydream. :-D Maybe one of them was a sailor who loved adventures. Maybe another one was a kungfu master/mistress (after all, Mom's dad was a medicine man) ha ha ha hahhhhh...Maybe another one was a tofu maker hi hi...ahem...OK, enough daydreaming for now...

Helsinki vs Sodankylä

1. I found out that -26'C in DRY Sodankylä feels BETTER than -13'C in MORE MOIST Helsinki (esp. when it's windy, too). Why? Because in Helsinki it felt that the cold air just seeped inside my jackets straight into my bones. Even R2 said it was cold!!! So I'd rather have cold weather in Sodankylä 'coz at least the coldness stays "outside" your body provided that you have enough layers of clothing.

1st pic: There are some Christmas lights left in Helsinki.

2. One thing I forgot about the big cities is the travel time to go from one place to another (plus the cost to travel from one place to another). Here in Sodankylä whenever I have to go "downtown", it takes but a few minutes (either walking or by bike) he he he he...

3. LOVE the fact that there are so many bookstores in Helsinki with an incredible collection of books (including English books) HA HA HA HA HA...whereas in Sodankylä there's only ONE small bookstore. Ahem.

2nd pic: More Christmas lights downtown Helsinki.

4. In Helsinki, everywhere you hear English and different languages spoken daily, whereas in Sodankylä you'll hear mostly only Finnish. They're definitely two different worlds apart!

5. Went to two museums in Helsinki (Kiasma Art Museum and Tennispalatsi Museum). In Kiasma they displayed contemporary art and we felt that many of them were way too contemporary for us ha ha ha...but we were both SO impressed with one particular art form.

This art form is located in one corner of the huge display room. The corner is VERY dark and it's an L-shaped. So from outside, you can't see anything but a plaque stating the title of the art form, the artist, etc. Anyway, the title of the art is: Foam. Then you have to walk inside the L-shaped corner (which is REALLY dark - I had such an ominous feeling when I entered) and then about 2 metres ahead of you there's a huge screen. When I entered the site, the screen showed a round-like figure (which is actually a red balloon) and some foam (like when you've spread some foam to shave a guy) and then you notice someone starting to shave that round-like figure, but before you realize what it's about, the balloon pops out (obviously) with a LOUD bang! I was SO shocked ha ha ha ha ha...so I told R2 about it and told him to go see it. And he was also SHOCKED by the loud bang HI HI HI HI HI...

We both agreed that it was the best display in the whole museum, though we also like two others. The other one is a gorgeous picture which I can't describe (believe me, it's just GORGEOUS!) and the other one is a replica of a WAVE. It's SUPER cool! :-D

In Tennispalatsi Museum there are two displays, but we went only to one of them. It displayed mostly Russian paintings. I LOVE many of them, though I found that there were too many melancholic faces portrayed there. In some pics they look SO real (like photos instead of paintings) so that we had to get as close as a few centimetres away to find out whether they were paintings or photos HA HA HA HA HA HA...We just had to make sure!!! ;-D

3rd pic: Light display which changes colour every errr...few minutes or so?

6. We also went to watch Avatar 3D movie in Helsinki, but alas...something horrible happened. My eyes couldn't take them. The special effect of the movie was such (hard to explain, but those who've seen it must understand what I'm talking about) that 10 minutes into the movie, I started feeling dizzy and SUPER nauseous already! I had to shut my eyes for almost the rest of the movie (which was about 2,5 hours long, imagine that!) so that I wouldn't puke. Note: Even R2 said that in some scenes he felt a bit dizzy 'coz of the way the movie was made.

I wanted to go to the toilet to puke, but we were sitting in the middle of the row and I didn't want to bother other people. So the only trick I could do was just shut my eyes - the nausea subsided only after 45 minutes of doing this, can you imagine that? It felt like a HORRIBLE case of sea-sickness. Ugh!!!

I wonder if anybody has experienced something like this? Or am I just the weird one out?

7. What did I buy in Helsinki? One Finnish novel on a discount (only €2), one Finnish Exercise book, and some chocolate he he he he he...

4th pic: The Indian food we had at Tandoor Resto in Salomonkatu (near the Tennispalatsi Cinema). We had lunch buffet for €8.50 each - the red meat is chicken and that's the BEST thing ever! ;-D

OK, I'll blog-hop either later today or the day after today 'coz I'll be busy tomorrow. My new passport is done and the Indo Embassy employee even sent it to our hotel the same day, can you believe it? I'm REALLY impressed and thankful for their help! ;-D But tomorrow I have to go to the police station to move my residence permit to the new passport and I need to cook and clean up the apartment, as well.

GAAAHHHHH!!!!

I don't know why I feel that there have been SO many things to do lately that I don't even know anymore which I should do first he he he...

To make a new passport, I need some photos. I did go to a photo studio in Bandung, but I wasn't sure that the Indo Embassy would accept those photos 'coz they're the standardized Indonesian passport photos and the Indo Embassy told me that they wanted the kind of photos that the Finnish government accepts as passport photos. Good thing was that I got a CD with my photo in it, so I only had to print out some photos according to the Finnish passport photo guideline.

The problem was printing them. First of all, here there are no studios where you can print passport photos from a CD. So I had to measure the photo carefully and then make several copies and then send them online to be printed by a photo company. The first time I sent them a jpg file, I realized I had made a mistake 'coz I ordered the wrong photo size. So I had to redo the whole thing and then picked the right photo size.

Why did I go to such length just to print some photos? Of course there is a local photo service where I can get 4 passport photos right away, but they cost at least €15 (yep, for just 4 bloody pieces of passport photos).

Anyway, enough about the photos...soon I'll have to type up a letter, asking the Indo Embassy to renew my passport and then I have to bring a copy of our marriage certificate, too. Today I ordered Helsinki Card online (only for one day) - we can pick up the card from one of their agents (I think we'll just pick them up from the airport) and we can go take the airport bus to our hotel (fortunately the airport bus passes through the hotel 'coz there's a bus stop behind it). We have to pay €5,90 per person.

So these days I've also been browsing through the kinds of museums or attractions that we can visit 'coz by having Helsinki Card, we can get discounts to many tourist attractions - sometimes we don't even have to pay to get inside many museums. :-)))) The only museum I've been to when I was in Helsinki was Ateneum Museum . Back in 2004 there were modern art collections in the museum.

Photo taken from here

I almost got lost when I tried to find the museum back then, you know? I'm such a lousy map reader hi hi hi...I actually went to the opposite direction to where the museum was supposed to be. I kept walking and walking until I realized I was in an area where there couldn't possibly be museums hi hi hi hi hi...it's hard to describe, but I just knew I was far away from where a museum could be, so I went back and I kept walking and walking and finally I found it hi hi hi...

That was also why I let R2 read the map when we went to Singapore. I just followed him wherever he told me to go HA HA HA HA HA...like a good sheep following its shepherd HI HI HI HI HI...

Ahem...OK, enough rambling, time to blog-hop a bit.

P.S. We'll be staying in Scandic Continental Helsinki. The hotel has a swimming pool, so I'm gonna bring my swimsuit with me HO HO HO HO HO HO...I wanna swim 'coz I swam only once when I was in Bandung ('coz it rained a lot after the first week).

Quite a Scare!

For those of you who tried visiting my blog yesterday but couldn't, there was some problem with one advertising link embedded in my HTML page. Yesterday I couldn't even view my layout at all. JulianaRW helped me in solving the problem by telling me to delete that particular code embedded in my HTML page. Glad to know that now my blog is working fine again (I HOPE!).

Anyway, I've been browsing for the best type of transportation to go to Helsinki in order to renew my passport. So far I'm thinking of going there early January 'coz there are some interesting events in Helsinki then. I don't know yet if R2 can come with me or not. If he can't come, then I need to figure out my schedule and type of transportation so that he can still go to work normally. I mean, if I decide to go by train or plane, he has to take me to Rovaniemi and he needs to pick me up from Rovaniemi again (it takes about 1,5 hours by car to go there).

We'll see how it goes. I plan on staying there for one or two nights (depending on whether or not I go there alone and how many events I want to see). Now I need to make some money 'coz I'm going to spend quite a sum by going there he he...

P.S. In Bandung I bought a few packets of Chinese herbs for "fertility" purposes. I just thought, "Oh well, why not try a few?" I drank it two days ago and yesterday and it tasted SO awful. Ugh...R2 has to drink his part next week (once a week)...can't imagine his face when he drinks it later he he he...

Topsy Turvy

I'm rather pissed today 'coz in the morning I called Indonesian Embassy in Helsinki to ask them to send me a form that I need to renew my passport. A few months ago I called them to ask if I could send my application through snail mail 'coz I live far away from Helsinki and I was told that I could do so (considering my distance from them).

However, this morning I was told that the regulation had changed. So I MUST show myself to Helsinki to submit all the papers and photos and then I can leave everything there and they'd send me the new passport when it's done.

That means I have to spend AT LEAST 200 Euros only for the tickets - even bus and train tickets may cost that much both ways. ARRRGGGHHHH!!!!

I don't need to go there this month, though. However, we're planning to go abroad for a week next spring (perhaps in April), so I do need to sort it out at least in February, 'coz then I have to transfer my residence permit to my new passport (and I still don't know how long the transfer takes).

I'm thinking of spending a night in Helsinki, 'coz if I spend THAT much money only to submit all the papers and then back again, it'd be SUCH A WASTE, don't you think??? However, I don't want to stay there too long 'coz then it means I'm going to spend MUCH more money. Ugh...and I still have to save money for our trip in April.

Sorry for my rant. Anyway, I found this BEAUTIFUL article on infertility that I want to share here...Even if you've never experienced it, you may get more ideas on the feelings and thoughts of people who've dealt (or who're dealing) with infertility:

Last Post Before Rhodes

This morning almost had a heart attack when I asked hubby where his passport was and he told me that I was the one who took it and put it somewhere (he meant when we moved here 4 months ago). I didn't remember a thing about it and I almost panicked...until I remembered that he brought a waist bag to Indo, so I went to get it and ta-daaaa...the passport was still tucked there safely!!! PHEW!!!

Anyway, this is my last post before Rhodes 'coz tomorrow we'll be at my in-laws' the whole day (R2's eldest brother and family are here in Lapland for 2 weeks) and 'coz we shouldn't sleep too late tomorrow. We should start driving to Oulu at around 10 am on Sunday 'coz it takes around 5.5 hours to get to the airport there. We'll only arrive in Rhodes at around midnight, though he he he he he he...

So now we're almost set except for a few last-minute things that we should pack only then (like toothpaste, etc.). I called my Mom a few days ago after not having called her for a while due to my busy life, so we talked for about 1,5 hours on Skype HE HE HE HE HE...Always such a pleasure to talk to her and listen to her stories.

When I was working as a translator (I worked from home full-time, so whenever I felt fed up with work, I could just stop and go to the malls to refresh myself) and after my friends got married and got busy with their hubby and kid and family life, I had plenty of time to go out with Mom. Because Mom sold food at the traditional market, she had afternoons off, though I had to make sure first that she had finished cooking for the next day, but still it was easy to ask her out with me. She loved going to the cinemas, too, 'coz when she was young, the cinema was probably the only entertainment she could get. She'd go to the cinema every week when she was young.

So we'd just go around the malls, relaxing...and sometimes we'd go watch a movie and we'd eat out. Sometimes I took her to have a facial and a body massage. I miss doing that with her, but I'm GLAD I got plenty of chances to do it with her when I was in Indo. After she had trouble with her knee joints (one time she couldn't even walk), I didn't dare take her out to the malls 'coz I was afraid that window shopping would make her feel so much pain. But still sometimes even during that period, she'd want to go out with me, so on some good days when the pain wasn't too harsh, we'd go to the malls and we'd stop to sit down a lot or I'd just pick a movie so that she didn't have to walk so much.

Funny thing is that if she liked the movie, then she'd totally be awake. But if she didn't like the movie, there would be moments when I found her dozing off in the cinema ha ha ha ha...But don't you people worry, after Mom started taking glucosamine MSM tablets to add oil to her joints, her knee is fine again.

OK, enough reminiscing (I guess I just miss her!) he he he...the other day something happened that I should also add to my list of "unimportant things that make me happy":

a. When my hands or feet are cold and R2 tries his best to warm them up by holding them tightly with his palm and rubbing them with another palm.

b. When my gentle kicks work in making R2 turn around and stop snoring at night (sometimes he falls asleep first and snores and then I'd have trouble to fall asleep).

c. Piles of snow in December.

d. Going to the cabin with R2 - esp. 'coz that was the place where he proposed me.

e. Watching the fat bees gathering honey in summer in my in-laws' garden (in Indo I've never seen such fat bees 'coz in Indo the bees are usually "taller" and "slimmer" - not "short" and "fat") - they're SO cute!!!

f. No long queues here in Sodankylä wherever you go.

g. Reading something that inspires me, that encourages me, that motivates me, that makes me feel understood, that makes me feel that I'm not so alone in the world.

Okay, time for me to blog-hop a bit before watching a movie he he he he...Enjoy Alexander Rybak with "Fairytale'", the winner of Eurovision 2009.

See ya around after we get back from Rhodes!!! Take care, everybody!

HAPPY, HAPPY, HAPPY!!!

Why am I happy? Let me count the ways and be thankful for each and every one of them.

1. Today I received my passport back. I sent it last Monday to the Indonesian Embassy in Helsinki to report myself. Why do I need to report myself? Well, one other reason other than the obvious is that once I've reported myself, my new address is now written at the back of my passport, so when I fly back to Finland, I don't have to pay 1 million rupiah tax at the airport HUE HE HE HE HE HE HE...Plus I'm RELIEVED that the passport has arrived safely HE HE HE HE HE...

2. Because of reason number 1, I can use the money to go to a SPA in Bandung in October HUA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA...I'm gonna pamper myself in Bandung. *WIDE GRIN*

3. My new book's arrived (Jostein Gaarder's Maya). Hubby asked me if I wanted to buy a book since he wanted to order something online, so I picked one. I still have many other unread novels, but I just love stacking them up to read in the future ho ho ho ho ho ho...

4. My Brit friend and husband and teacher have told me that I may be able to teach Finnish to foreigners later in the future. It's something I'm considering seriously, since I think I'd love to do something like that. ;-D I know it'll take me years to be able to be as good in Finnish (compared to my English knowledge), but I'm in no hurry. ;-D

I'm THANKFUL for their encouragement and support.

5. Tonight we were supposed to go to the bars with hubby's brother and girlfriend, but they cancelled it. I don't mind that since it means I have plenty of spare time to relax (read comics or do whatever I want to do today) ho ho ho...

6. Seeing hubby's SATISFIED GRIN as I tucked him to sleep on the sofa just now.

7. Hubby bought pepper steak for us HO HO HO HO HO HO HO HO...I LOVE pepper steak! ;-D

8. A little while ago while hubby was doing something in front of his computer, I went over to smother him with kisses and I noticed that between the pages of his notebook, there was my Post-It Note from the day when he was sick and he had to stay home while I went to my Finnish course. I left him the note before I went to the course. I LOVE the fact that he keeps it safe, even though it's just a Post-It note. ;-D

9. Today's been wet again. It rained water for a while. I don't mind that since it means that the ice isn't slippery. That means that I'm SAFE from falling HO HO HO HO HO...

10. Cleaning up hubby's ears with a special tool from Indo. I LOVE cleaning up his ears ha ha ha ha ha...Sounds gross, eh? ;-D

11. My class is going to visit the Gold Mine next Friday. I've never been there before, even though I've lived in Finland for a little over a year. And it's FOR FREE since the company who organizes the course is paying for that. YIIIIPPIIIIIIEEEEEEEE!!!! I'm gonna bring my digicam to take pics. ;-D

12. The other day when I walked home, I noticed something very cute: as the snow was melting and water was running fast to the drain all over the village, three birds were cleaning themselves up in the running water nearby my apartment building. What a sight!!! I even stopped to watch them. Mmmm...

13. Spring is comiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnnggggggggggg!!! And lately here in Sodankylä, the day is longer than the night (17 hours versus 7 hours). YEEEESSSSS!!!

14. This conversation:

Me: Am I demanding?
Hubby: Sometimes. (smile)
Me: What? When?
Hubby: No comment.
Me: Okaaayyyy...does it bother you, then?
Hubby: No.
Me: GOOD! (BIG grin)

Other than those, here are other things I'm thankful for:

1. My family, husband, husband's family, and friends. They're always so supportive, understanding, and kind to me.

2. My blogger friends. Without them, I wouldn't be the woman I am today. ;-D

3. Peace of mind.

4. Being able to sleep well at nights.

5. My health.

6. Enlightenment.

7. Wonderful food, tasty snack, and refreshing water.

8. People's thoughtfulness (strangers or non-strangers alike).

9. Open doors and closed doors.

10. Love, hope, and farts. *GRIN*

What's in Your Bag Meme?

Max and Angela tagged me to do this meme. At first when Max tagged me, I told her that I did a similar one already, but after some thinking, in that other meme, I didn't get a chance to take a pic to show you everything inside my bag. So, this is a picture of my bag (bought on sale for about €8) and what I put inside it. This is the bag I bring everywhere he he he...It's not too small and it's not too big. Perfect for me! ;-D

As you can see, I have my passport, a copy of my marriage certificate, an umbrella, mobile phone plus its casing (the casing's made personally for me by a friend of mine), sunglasses (I don't always bring them, depending on the weather), a pink comb, a pink wallet (bought in Indonesia), a pencil and two pens and an eraser (still with the price tag on it HA HA HA HA HA HA), a sanitary napkin with a funky package (bought in Indonesia), two lip balms, one lipstick, and two lip glosses, and the package with Y on it is my birth control pill package ha ha ha ha ha...I put it there to make sure that if we ever stay a night or two in some place, I won't forget to bring them.

There you go! Hope you're happy enough to see my bag and the stuff I put there. ;-D
