3BT: Random Days

1. Hubby managed to make me laugh again with his antics.

Me: "Have you always been this crazy?"
R2: "Nope. It started after we met."
Me: "Is that supposed to flatter me?"
R2: "Maybe." (grin)

2. Spending Midsummer holiday in Kelujärvi, watching the leaves sway in the wind, sitting down on the front porch stairs with hubby and family. Hubby sat behind me, I leaned back and watched the clouds roll by above me. Such bliss!

3. Inner peace.

4. Watching this cute video clip:

5. Watching these AMAZING pictures. (My fave is the fourth one, the grinning seal - it looks SO VERY HAPPY LOL!!!)

6. Finding this old song by chance:

3BT: Random Days

1. The last Christmas gift package that I ordered arrived already yesterday. Phew!!! Just in time for Christmas he he...

2. I've got surprise gifts and Christmas cards this year. THANK YOU, people!

3. A customer bought a big sack of dog food and said, "This is Christmas food." It made me laugh instantly! :-D

4. We've booked a trip for our spring holiday next year. WOOOOHHHHHHHHOOOOOO!!! :-D THANKFUL to have a chance to do a trip again!

5. Slathering lotion all over hubby's legs in winter and hearing no protest.

6. After serving an English-speaking customer, I turned to the next one and accidentally mentioned the sum in English, which prompted us both to laugh at the same time HA HA HA HA...Some days it takes my brain a longer time to switch back to Finnish LOL!!!

7. Hearing, "Don't run! You don't have to rush! I'm not in a hurry" when I try to come back to the till as quickly as possible.

8. Finding Jeruk Bali (Balinese Orange) aka Hunajapomelo which took me straight back to my childhood 'coz I used to eat a lot of it when I was a child - and we used to turn the thick skin into a toy. Ah...lovely memories!!! :-D

8. Looking at cute/funny cat pictures (well, mainly cat pics but there are some other animals, too). Makes me go ooh-aah-ing. Mmmmmmmm...

Heviz #2

OK, let's carry on with the holiday pics again, shall we?

In Heviz we went to Aiyara Thai Massage 'coz we're both crazy about massages. We went there twice actually ha ha...the first time we tried the traditional Thai massage without really knowing what it was like (the other times we had massages, we had only tried oil massages and Balinese massage as well as deep tissue massage), so we were in for a little surprise when we found out what it was like. They really worked on your sore spots using their arms as well as gravity and their feet, as well. However, afterwards we felt REALLY relaxed and there were no more sore spots whatsoever, even on the soles of our feet.

The second time around, we tried oil massage and it was nice and relaxing, but I think that they are better at traditional Thai massages because we've had better oil massages. Still it was worth it, though he he...The best part of Aiyara Thai Massage was that the owners spoke English very well. In fact, the guy who works there was VERY friendly without being nosy, so it was really a pleasure to talk to him. :-D

Anyway, here are some pics of the Centrum in Heviz.

Below is the stage for bands 'coz of the upcoming St. Stephen's Day. The two "towers" on the far right are the entrance to Heviz Thermal Lake. On the left side of the pic is the bus stop.

Wine and food stalls outside Heviz Thermal Lake. Unfortunately right after St. Stephen's Day was over, they were all gone. :-(

Some pics of downtown Heviz:

We went to that cafe to eat some cakes (actually I bought some cakes, R2 had coffee and ice-cream) he he he...The cakes are HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!! :-D

Here are two pics of me on two different occasions, eating two different types of cakes ha ha...And yeah, we sat on the exact same table 'coz R2 insisted on it HA HA HA HA HA HA HA...

And here's R2 with his HUGE kiwi ice-cream. Unfortunately I don't remember anymore how much they cost, but I don't recall them being too expensive, though he he...so they must be decently priced. :-D

And we tried Kürtőskalács or "Chimney Cake" or "Stove Cake" for the first time in Heviz. Turned out it was more expensive than the ones sold in Keszthely. The one in Heviz costs 600 HUF (€ 2,2) whereas the one in Keszthely costs 450 HUF (€ 1,7).

Here's a pic of us resting and enjoying the shade near Heviz Thermal Lake. The lake is surrounded by some shady parks.

Last pic of the day...some cute looking bottles sold in a souvenir shop in Heviz. There are SO many more souvenir shops in Heviz compared to downtown Keszthely. Each of us found a pair of rather cheap jeans there in Heviz, so if you want to go shopping, then Heviz is a good place to start. :-D

Back from Keszthely!!!

Hello, world!!! We've come back home from our 2 week holiday in Keszthely, Hungary. Actually we spent the last night in Budapest 'coz the train trip from Keszthely to Budapest took around 3 hours and our plane left at around 11.40 am, so if we had wanted to go straight to the airport from Keszthely, it meant that we would have had to get up at 2 am to catch the early train. Not really my idea of fun ha ha ha...

We had a good time there. The temperature was WAY too hot on some days (our apartment hotel is not air-conditioned), but thankfully the temperature always dropped down during the nights. So we got loads and loads of sunshine!!! :-D The first eve we arrived there, it was cool enough to wear jeans and a jacket (perhaps around 15'C) and the second day was also rather cool in the morning, but then the temperature started going up and up and up until it reached 36'C at least during the day. In one other town that we visited, there was a sign showing that it was even 41'C, but we both didn't think it was really accurate. It must've shown that number 'coz it did feel MUCH hotter if you stayed in the sun for hours. Staying in the shade wasn't that bad, though, so it must've been only around 36'C in actuality.

What did we do there? Visited museums, tasting local cuisine, getting full body massages twice, going to Balaton beach to swim and sunbathe, and going on an air balloon ride (I'm going to write about that in a separate post). :-D Eating too much, walking so much, laughing so much, reading books in between (the TV programs are dubbed!), relaxing, building lovely memories together he he...:-D

Here's a pic of a lovely doorway in Centrum area in Keszthely. Next to the door there is a wine store.

Here are some of the things that we've experienced:

1. We took the minibus shuttle service from the airport (2500 HUF/person or around €9.2). It was very efficient and professional (didn't have to wait long at all before our car was waiting for us to leave), but the bad side was that it took longer to go to the train station because they also dropped off other passengers along the way. That was why we hadn't booked the train tickets online to go to Keszthely because I didn't know for sure how long it would take to arrive at the train station.

At the train station we realized that we had to lug our suitcases up the stairs. Oh dear...so R2 did the heavy lifting and here comes trouble!!! We went to the nearest ATM, but it didn't work. We had tried getting some money from the ATM in the airport, but it didn't work, either. I know it worked for some other people 'coz I had seen some people take money from it. Based on our experience in Budapest last year where we could get money easily via ATM, we didn't bring too much cash with us because we thought it would be more convenient getting the money from ATMs. Thankfully we could pay for the shuttle service by credit card, but in the train station we were a bit stressed out 'coz we couldn't get any cash and it was near boarding time for the next train leaving to Keszthely.

Fortunately unlike usual, R2 had a bit more cash than usual in his wallet, so I ran downstairs to the money exchange booth and exchanged the money and we went to buy the tickets. The officer didn't speak English much, but I had written down some important words, such as "first class" in Hungarian, but when I tried asking him if we could buy seats (my Hungarian friend said that it was better to buy seats at an extra charge), but he mistook my question and instead he told me the platform number. Mind you, I had to demonstrate to him that I was sitting down, but he raised up six fingers he he...So I just left and thought, "What the heck...maybe this train doesn't have any seat supplements."

The train was waiting for us already and we had enough money to pay for the one-way train tickets (first class cost 4260 HUF or around €16/person) and cold drinks because the train is not air-conditioned. We chose our seats and the journey went fine.

Here's a pic of the train that we took (photo was taken on the last day in Keszthely, on the way back to Budapest):

2. When we arrived in Keszthely train station, we didn't dare take the taxi because we didn't have too much cash with us, so we walked to our hotel. Thankfully it wasn't too far away, but still it would've been nicer to get a taxi ha ha ha ha ha...On our way back to the train station, we decided to get a taxi 'coz our suitcases were much heavier by then and the trip only cost 800 HUF (around €3). R2 said that in Finland just getting into a taxi costs €10 already.

3. Here are some things that frustrated me personally in Keszthely area:

a. They prefer speaking German than English. I went to a tourist info office near the beach and saw two young men, so I was confident that they would be able to speak English. I asked them if the supermarkets were open on Sundays and one of them replied in English, "Sorry, I don't speak English" and then he went to get a map to show me where the supermarkets were located.

In another tourist info office in Centrum, though, thankfully the woman there spoke English pretty well. Phew!!! But staying in Keszthely made me feel as though I should have taken up more German words!!! Didn't feel that way when we stayed in Budapest 'coz many people spoke more English there.

Side note: The most hilarious thing was that all through our stay, people either tried talking to R2 in Hungarian or German, but when we were in R-Kioski in Helsinki airport, the shopkeeper talked to R2 in English HA HA HA...I told him that he looked so international that he could be a Hungarian or a German or even an English-speaking person from goodness-knows-where! LOL!!!

Anyway, here's a pic of us near the beach. I was pleased to see so many swans, ducks, and some seagulls in the area. :-D

b. In almost every restaurant/cafe that we visited there, almost right away after we got the English menu or even while handing us the menu (some even assumed that we were Germans, so they gave us the German menu right away!), the waiter/waitresses asked us what we would like to drink. I find that a bit annoying because we didn't even know what they had to offer. So many times over we had to tell them to wait for a bit before we could choose.

Even while we were still obviously browsing the menu and even after we had told them to wait for a bit, most of them would come back so fast to ask again what we'd like to drink. GRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!

I also noticed that our plates would be taken away almost immediately after we had finished eating for some reason, though they didn't take the drinking glasses right away.

I complained to R2 that I found it annoying that they just assumed that we spoke Germans 'coz I didn't find any other Asians in Keszthely area and that upon seeing my face, I thought that people would resort to English instead of German, but he said that they may just assume that he was either a local or a German 'coz most of the time they spoke to him first instead of me.

My friend told me that it was normal for people to assume we spoke German 'coz Germany was the neighbouring country and that there were plenty of German-speaking Asians in Germany. Well, yeah, I suppose that's true, but still I felt a bit frustrated 'coz of that - because of the assumption more than anything else.

Gee...this post has been so long already, so I'll just stop here. I didn't check my emails or go online at all except for the last few days and boy it felt GOOD to be "disconnected" from the world every now and then. :-D

Midsummer Eve BBQ

Yesterday wasn't actually a particularly warm day and it even showered a little near midday. We had planned a BBQ in our yard with the family. MIL came at around 4.30 pm and then R2 started to prepare the chairs and grill outside. She brought flowers for me (bless her!) and we talked for a while. Temperature was around 13-14'C at that time and it was cloudy. It got a little sunny after 5 pm, but it wasn't warm at all. The temperature only rose 1 degree at the most and it dropped to 9'C after 2.30 am.

BIL and SIL came over at around 6.30 pm, long after R2, MIL, and I had finished eating ha ha ha ha...I prepared pork satay, salad, chips, two types of ice-cream, chips, and candies and I told them to bring whatever else they wanted to bring. MIL brought some sausages. BIL and SIL brought some sausages and hamburgers. MIL got inside already at around 5.30 pm 'coz she said it got too cold for her (she's feeling a little bit under the weather - runny nose and sore throat, you see).

She's going to have another knee cap operation next week, so if you're the praying type, please pray for her as well so that everything goes well, including recovery.

Before I share some pics, here are some links to some other Midsummer posts that I've written in the past:

First Midsummer in Finland
Midsummer Night's Dream

Now here are some random pics:

The pic before the last was BIL. He said to R2, "Come on and quickly take a pic of me. It's getting hard to breathe here, you know?" HA HA HA HA HA HA HA...we had fun playing cards together. Went to bed at around 4 am ha ha ha ha ha...

Albertina + Natural Arts Museum

In Vienna we went to two museums. The first one was Albertina. They were displaying artworks made by the Impressionists, although there were also the abstract section, but we didn't go there because I'm not into that. We didn't use any audio guide for both museums, so we were just looking around at the paintings mostly. The Natural Arts Museum is FAR bigger than Albertina, but as usual we weren't allowed to take any pics of the places.

Anyway, here are some pics of Albertina. I was really fascinated by these stairs! I think the painting must be some kind of waterlily painting by Monet or something like that. Unfortunately there were only a few small Monet paintings there, though I would have loved to see more. I bought a thick and heavy Monet book when I was in Indo and I left it there. Maybe someday I should take it to Finland with me.

Then here's us after we ended our tour in Albertina.

While walking around the city, we passed by the building again, but from a different angle, so here's the pic:

In Natural Arts Museum, there was this one section dedicated to Klimt. It was a small but fascinating section, but what blew my mind was the sizes of other rooms of the building. It really had tall ceilings and some of the paintings were SO HUGE that if one fell over you, you'd be knocked out right away. To see the huge paintings well, I had to step farther back across the room in order to enjoy it. And there were so many huge rooms and paintings to cover that it took so long to finish (this is without audio guide, I can't imagine how much longer the tour would take with audio guide!!!).

The below pic only shows half of the museum, 'coz the other parts looked like they were being renovated on, so I didn't take a pic of that part.

Zooming in on the dome:

Anyway, in the middle of the rooms for the paintings, there was a really charming cafe with a lovely dome on top. I wasn't sure if we could take pics of the cafe or not, but I saw some other tourists doing so and nobody said anything, so I took a quick pic of the dome and the cafe from one angle. Here they are:

OK, that's it for today. It finally feels like permanent spring has arrived, but let's keep our fingers crossed so that no more snow will come ha ha...My MIL told me that in the old days, it was usual to snow still in June. Anyway, take care, people, and have a lovely day there!

Cabin Trip Easter 2012

After work on Thursday we went to the cabin. The day started off sunny but then it got cloudy during the afternoon. We arrived at the cabin at around 4 pm and this time we had no trouble walking on thick snow 'coz it had condensed in many parts and became harder (compare it with Cabin Trip Feb 2012). There were tracks of cross-country skis in many places.

I forgot to note the temperature that day, but it was probably around 3'C under the sun and closer to 0'C after it got cloudy.

Here are some cloud pics...I LOVE taking pics of different cloud formations ha ha...

This is what the view on the frozen lake when we had just arrived there...

Zooming in on the above pic...

Then the dark clouds shifted and here was what it looked like...

Another view of the lovely clouds...

After taking those pics, we tried clearing the path towards the lake before we could get some water for sauna (not drinking water). Then R2 had to get some water, so again he had to do hard work to make a hole in the thick ice. At around 6 pm the sky got so dark again and snowstorm came. It probably lasted for about half an hour or an hour at most, then we enjoyed a very nice view of sunset at around 8 pm (click to view it in a bigger version).

After the sun went down, the sky was filled with stars!!! And a full moon! :-D

At around 5 am I woke up to pee in the outdoor toilet and I saw the HUGEST orange moon ever (I took a short video clip of it but I haven't converted it yet). The orange moon was dangling so low in the sky as it was about to set. I've never seen the moon that low and that huge and that orange before...just amazing!!! I tried taking pics of it but it didn't turn out great (it only looked yellow and it looked small). But anyway, this is a very lame pic of the setting moon...

I'm telling ya that the real deal was more orange than that. I just wish you could all see it for yourself...but anyway...here is why we had to clear up the path before we could get some water. Pic taken when we were on the way back to the car...

Yep, the sun was shining SO brightly on Friday and it was so warm. :-D Here's one other random pic I took when I was there...

OK, now I still have plenty of things to do...wishing you Happy Easter and for those who don't celebrate it...then hope you've all enjoyed a longer weekend! :-D :-D :-D

Cabin Trip Feb 2012

FINALLY I had the full weekend off from work and we could go to the cabin in Kelujärvi. The only problem was that it had been snowing a lot in the beginning of the week, so I was wondering how tough it'd be to reach the cabin. FYI, the cabin was a few hundred metres away from the house and now that the house was empty, there was nobody clearing the path towards the cabin anymore.

We arrived there on Friday after work at around 4 pm and the temperature was -18'C.

See how thick the snow is if it's not cleared up?

Even before we started the journey there, R2 had trouble already getting some firewood for the cabin (mind you, there's no electricity in the cabin nor an indoor toilet). Look at the pile of snow covering the pile of firewood!

The sled in the above pic was used to carry our stuff with us. It was REALLY heavy 'coz we had to bring drinking water with us (there is no running tap in the cabin).

OK, now here we were starting our tough walk in the snow...notice the deep impressions of our footsteps in the snow.

In some parts, my leg went as deep as my knee. Granted, I'm only 145 cm, but it was really tough work to walk towards the cabin 'coz we had to really pull up our leg high to make each step.

Standing on top of the frozen lake...

ALMOST THERE!!! It went a bit uphill from there, so R2 had to rest a bit 'coz he had the tougher work with all the burden on his back plus he had to drag the sled. Notice that in the pic below, he was standing on top of a more frozen snow so that his feet didn't sink too deeply into the snow.

Anyway, the sky was GORGEOUS when we got there...lucky enough we could be there before sundown, so we could enjoy the glorious sky...

Another battle we had to win was to try to get water from the frozen lake. There was at least 30 cm of snow on top of the icy lake surface and then R2 had to try to make a hole. The ice itself was at least 30 cm thick, so it took a LONG time before we could get some water to heat up the sauna in the cabin (the sauna uses firewood). He almost gave up 'coz he had run out of strength (mind you he hadn't eaten anything yet at that time and it was already close to 5 pm). He shouted out, "HALLELUJAH!" when we finally got water HA HA HA HA HA...

After that we could finally eat and then went to sauna, listened to the radio, and went to sleep. On Saturday it was snowing lightly. It was -10'C but grainy weather. Lucky that we got to see the gorgeous sky on Friday!!!

Here's a pic of me posing in front of the cabin. The view behind me was the frozen lake. Notice how grainy and grey it is compared to the photos on Friday!

See what I mean? It was still quite a sight, though, to see the sun like that he he...

I also saw lots of hare's paw prints everywhere...here's a comparison between my boot and the hare's paw prints. My boot size is 39 (My original shoe size is actually 36, but for boots I always buy bigger sizes so that I can wear three pairs of socks in the depth of winter and still feel comfy wearing them).

All in all, it was a well-deserved, relaxing cabin trip. Would love to do it again later on! :-D
