3BT: Random Days

1. Hubby's now over his flu/infection or whatever it was, so KISSING FEST is on! YAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYY!!!!!

2. Living near my workplace, because that means I can still walk to and from work when it was -34'C outside. 

3. It's always funny how suddenly you feel hot all over so easily outside when the temperature spikes up about 10'C or more after such cold days he he...

4. Telling hubby this, "Keep on farting, even if it stinks, because it means you're alive."

5. Touched by Nikki's comment on my previous blog post. Thank you SO MUCH for having supported me along my journey and for your empathy and friendship. It means a lot to me. I'm glad our paths have crossed. :-)

6. Visiting my grieving friend with another friend. Even though the occasion was sad, it was great to catch up.

7. Managed to switch a shift with my coworker in order to attend my friend's husband's funeral. I was so worried I wouldn't be able to come, because I do want to come. Phew! I'm glad I have lovely coworkers and that work is rather flexible.

8. Hearing that the friend's husband who passed away say these words before his passing: "I feel so much love for everybody and everything." What an ending to a life and how inspiring and touching!

9. I've just booked an impromptu trip somewhere (it's a secret) and I'm VERY VERY excited about it, because during this trip I'll not only be able to meet some friends, but also be able to make one of my lifelong dreams come true. (wicked grin) Don't worry, readers, I'll definitely let you know about it later on. :-D

3BT: Random Days

1. The last Christmas gift package that I ordered arrived already yesterday. Phew!!! Just in time for Christmas he he...

2. I've got surprise gifts and Christmas cards this year. THANK YOU, people!


3. A customer bought a big sack of dog food and said, "This is Christmas food." It made me laugh instantly! :-D

4. We've booked a trip for our spring holiday next year. WOOOOHHHHHHHHOOOOOO!!! :-D THANKFUL to have a chance to do a trip again!

5. Slathering lotion all over hubby's legs in winter and hearing no protest.


6. After serving an English-speaking customer, I turned to the next one and accidentally mentioned the sum in English, which prompted us both to laugh at the same time HA HA HA HA...Some days it takes my brain a longer time to switch back to Finnish LOL!!!

7. Hearing, "Don't run! You don't have to rush! I'm not in a hurry" when I try to come back to the till as quickly as possible. 

8. Finding Jeruk Bali (Balinese Orange) aka Hunajapomelo which took me straight back to my childhood 'coz I used to eat a lot of it when I was a child - and we used to turn the thick skin into a toy. Ah...lovely memories!!! :-D

8. Looking at cute/funny cat pictures (well, mainly cat pics but there are some other animals, too). Makes me go ooh-aah-ing. Mmmmmmmm...

Music + Memories: (I Wanna Take) Forever Tonight

Some songs help me remember certain memories and this time I'm gonna talk about Peter Cetera's and Crystal Bernard's "(I Wanna Take) Forever Tonight", which became a hit in Indo in 1995.

This song took me straight back to my High School trip to Bali because they kept playing this song on the radio during our Bali trip. I was on my last year in High School and was in a different class than my closest friends. There were 6 classes altogether (about 40 students per class) and we went by buses.

I was in a bus with some of my closest friends. Luckily the teachers weren't very strict on things like this he he he he...However, I spent most of the bus trip resting 'coz I had such a bad case of motion sickness despite the fact that I took some medication already prior to the trip. If I remember correctly I threw up 6 times altogether during the bus trip and once on the ferry trip to Bali. Yeah, my sea sickness is even MUCH worse than my motion sickness. Mind you, the ferry trip only lasted for 30 minutes but my mistake was looking at the waves!!! On the way back by the ferry, though, I sat down and closed my eyes the whole time and it went fine! Phew!!!

Anyway, our bus stopped for a few hours during the night due to an accident. I was asleep at that time so I didn't know what was going on. It was dark outside and I woke up 'coz the students in the bus were getting hyped out about something. Turned out that the driver must've dozed off and then our bus accidentally hit a minibus. I don't remember anymore what happened to the minibus or how bad the damage was. :-( So we had to wait for the bus company to send us another driver while the police took the other driver. I certainly hope the driver and the people in the minibus were fine in the end. There was at least one teacher in each bus, though, so we didn't have to do anything much because the teacher dealt with it.

The delay meant that we were late when we arrived in Bali (it was probably around 2 or 3 am when we arrived at the hotel) and we went straight to our own rooms to sleep (again luckily I could be in the same room with some of my close friends - the main point was that each room was filled with 4 students). Back then there were no ATMs whatsoever (no debit cards, either), so everybody took cash for the trip. There were no mobile phones, so many of the students went to a phone rental place (there were several booths of phone that one could use to make long-distance phone calls) and I remembered having to queue for a while before I could contact my parents.

Every day there was special programs for us where we toured around the place together by buses except for one free day when we could do whatever we wanted. My close friends and I rented a car and we went around for a while, though it wasn't really effective because we got lost many times (no GPS at that time!). 

Here's a pic of me and two close friends at the beach. Yeah, I had that kind of face 'coz my naughty friend took off my hat!!!!!!!!!!! Pardon the quality of the pic 'coz the photo was taken with a regular camera ha ha ha ha ha...

And what did the teachers do while we were having fun at the beach? They had to watch our belongings he he he he he he he...

One last memory that I'd never forget. A bunch of us were already in a bus somewhere in Bali, waiting for the other students to come so that we could go somewhere else when all of a sudden this young blonde tourist just came inside the bus, smiled at us (with the tip of his nose covered in lots of sunscreen) and then went out from the back of the bus whereas some of the girls in the bus shrieked out and tried to snap a pic of the guy HA HA HA HA HA HA HA...oh dear goodness!!!! Memories!!! :-D

3BT: Random Days

1. Hearing a female customer said, "Look! Your fave sweets are on sale!" to her hubby. And the hubby bought 12 packs of them. :-D What made me think it was beautiful was the fact that the wife was focused on what the hubby liked.

2. We've just booked a short trip to Vienna for our upcoming spring holiday (and after bargaining at work, I've finally gotten the permission to have the 6 days off).

3. Planning, browsing through the internet to find out what kind of fun things we can do there and daydreaming. WOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

4. Seeing an icicle hanging from the roof - plus funny-shaped snow.


5. Watching the lazy snow falling slowly from inside our kitchen window...the world felt hush hush and so serene...

6. Have been craving for KFC chicken for a while now and finally today I had time and energy to make some. They came out VERY VERY delicious. Yum...

7. Finding out already what hubby needs (to be his March birthday gift) and ordering it already while there're still winter sales ('coz what needs is a winter sweater). Plus finding a good deal on the sweater! :-D

8. Stealing hubby's warmth under the blanket at nights by putting my cold feet on his warm thigh. Ah, to feel the warmth of his body at night is just pure bliss...

9. Indonesian ear cleaning tool is THE BEST!!!

Back from Pori!!!

Hi, guys!

Finally I have time to rest and blog. Arrived at 11 pm on Sunday night and I had to go to bed right away 'coz at 5.45 I had to get up to get ready to work and yesterday I had an evening shift, so I could rest longer on Monday night.

R2 took us to the bus station on Wed morning and the bus was already there. The bus trip went fine and we got off in the train station. The train was waiting for us already, so we found our seats and sat down right away. Then it started raining in Rovaniemi. Along the way from Rovaniemi to Parkano (probably around 800 km), it kept on pouring rain (the train stopped in many stations).

In some parts it rained so hard and when we were nearing Parkano's train station, we got up to get prepared to get off, but then the train stopped before we reached the station. After waiting for 20 minutes, there was an announcement that there had been storms there around the area and there were fallen trees on the train tracks, so they had to get rid of them before we could continue our journey.

So we decide to sit down again 'coz we didn't know how long it was going to take. From the seats, we could see many fallen trees all around us. Yep...my first train journey in Finland and this kind of thing happened. Anyhow, passengers started calling the people who were going to pick them up to let them know about this condition. In the end, the train was 45 minutes late. BIL then took us to their rented cabin in Kihniö. Kihniö is an area in Parkano and Parkano is about 1-1,5 hour drive from Pori. Here let me show you the map from Sodankylä to Pori.

Anyway, BIL told us that the electricity in Parkano had been switched off due to the storm, including in the cabin area. He still had to buy some groceries, but he took us first to the cabin to rest. Then he took off to find an open store near the area. SIL and I then left MIL in the cabin to rest while we went to the outdoor grilling place to cook some chicken. It was our first time to grill anything on our own, but we managed to do it pretty well ha ha ha...

The door on the left is the bedroom. The closed door leads to the toilet, shower, and sauna. Behind the fireplace there's a small kitchenette plus the fridge and a dishwasher.

That day we had dinner together inside the cabin 'coz there were so many mosquitoes outside. BIL came back right on time to eat. Then we just talked and played cards. Finally at around 11 pm the lights went on again and we could turn on the sauna. After sauna we played cards again until late. I'm gonna share more pics later on. Now I'm going to blog-hop a little.

New Bed

Our new bed arrived yesterday. Remember that in the second bedroom we only have a sofabed and sometimes we take a nap on that sofabed during the day. We'd been wanting to buy a new bed but it wasn't a top priority, so only now hubby found a great deal for the bed and the mattresses. Yesterday we were busy putting it together.

For me doing things like this with hubby is SO MUCH FUN. I suppose in a way it's because my dad was never much of a handyman plus in Indo, hiring a handyman to fix stuff in our place was still affordable (unlike here in Finland). I find it SO SEXY to see hubby in action like that (I'm being very serious here, not joking). On top of that, we get to spend quality time together, laughing and singing crazy songs he he he...

I went to a furniture store in the afternoon 'coz it was closing up, so they were selling everything at a discount. I bought 3 pillows and one sofa pillow 'coz my own pillow was starting to be unshapely he he he he he...and my new pillow was just great!!! :-D

Tonight MIL is going to spend a night here 'coz tomorrow we (she and I) have an early morning bus ride to catch and due to the fact that MIL has hearing problems, she takes off her hearing aid during the night, so it's kinda hard for her to get up so early when she can't even hear the alarm. So we're going to help wake her up he he he...and she gets to try our new bed.

Hubby also said yesterday that we should probably sleep in the second (much smaller) bedroom in winter 'coz it's easier to warm up the smaller room. I agree completely, so I suppose in winter we're going to switch to that bedroom. It's kinda fun to be able to "change scenery", you know? HE HE HE HE HE HE...

I've packed almost all the necessary stuff for tomorrow's trip. I only need to show MIL my dress to make sure that it's decent enough to wear to a party like this. I don't want to be overdressed but I don't want to be too casual either. Why? Because the first year I was here, we were invited to that kind of party and I HAD NO IDEA what to wear. At that time we were just coming back from the cabin (straight to the party). I remember it was such a hot day and I was wearing jeans and T-shirt and I felt so out of place 'coz everybody else was wearing formal clothes. Gee whiz...and R2 didn't even tell me about it he he he...I guess he hadn't been invited to many parties like that, either. Oh well...now I know better, but still I'd better ask MIL just to be sure he he he...:-D

Anyway, I'll be back only later next week I suppose...take care, everybody, and have a wonderful time!!!

Toot Toot...

Yep, you read it right. I'm going on my first bus and train trip to southern Finland on Wed next week. R2 stays home 'coz he's got work to do. MIL and I on the other hand are going down south to attend the graduation party of my nephew (MIL's 1st grandson) from High School. It's a big thing here in Finland, this kind of graduation party. Usually people put invitations on local papers that they're having this graduation party at home and this party is due on Saturday 6th (so everybody who wants to throw this party should do so on the same day). I'm gonna take some pics later on.

BIL will pick us up at the train station and take us to a cabin somewhere (never been there before), so it's gonna be fun. I've checked the weather report and it should be rather hot there starting from Wed. We'll see.

I'll only go back on Sunday night and it's gonna be a bit rough 'coz I have morning shift on Monday (but I can always sleep on the way back to Sodankylä). Good thing I only have an evening shift on Tuesday and nothing else that week, so even if I get tired, I can rest a lot the rest of the week ha ha ha ha ha...

Can't wait to goooooo!!!! I shall be scant during my trip, so I'll report about this trip only after Monday or even Tuesday two weeks from now.

Free Budapest Walking Tour

Let's begin my trip with the free walking tour. At first I was thinking of naming the posts "Day 1 in Budapest" and so on, but then again they'd be such long posts so I'll have to break them down in several parts ha ha ha...so it's easier to just divide them like this, I guess.

On Tuesday we decided to join the Free Budapest Walking Tour to get some insider's insights and tips and tricks 'coz we didn't have to book anything. We went to a cafe first to get breakfast and then found the appointed place for the tour. We were there about 40 minutes early 'coz we wanted to make sure we could find it, so we went to a nearby store first and took some pictures of the surrounding area. The morning tour started at 10.30 am and lasted for 2.5 hours. Click on the link to get more info about the tours that they organize and what kind of places you can see on each tour.

Nearby there's this cafe called Gerbeaud. It's supposed to be very famous for its delicacies, but we didn't go there 'coz they say it's rather pricy he he...still the building is lovely.


At 10.30 am the tour guide and her assistant came, so we started the tour by listening to her explanations. The group of people came from all over the place. Here's a pic of us while walking through a park (except of course I wasn't in the pic):


In the park there were "Locks of Love". People who want their love to stay forever should buy locks and write down their names on the locks and then throw the keys away to Danube River. Funny thing was that we saw a bike lock there, as well ha ha ha...


Here's a close-up look at the BIGGEST lock there. Somebody is definitely SO serious about this HA HA HA...

We also stopped by near this artificial pond below. It's actually the rooftop of a pub where they hold free concerts.


And look what I found in the pond!!! Actually there were three of them he he...the other two have darker colours.


The Little Princess statue. I thought it was a boy, but it's actually supposed to be a girl. The thing is, the sculptor used his own son as a model for this statue. That is why she looks boyish. As you can see, her knees are VERY shiny. It's 'coz they believe that if you rub them with both hands, you'll get lucky he he...


And who's this dude? It's what I call "The Lucky Policeman". If you rub the belly, it's said that you may get lucky ha ha ha...Again you'll notice that his belly is shinier than other parts of his body ha ha...

Back from Budapest!!!

We had a GREAT time in Budapest and the weather was pretty nice, too. It went even as hot as 25'C on Thursday. In the mornings it was rather chilly (around 11-15'C) and the wind could be pretty strong and cold, but after midday it was nice and warm (18-25'C) and we even sunbathed while resting our weary legs and feet. Why weary legs and feet? Because R2 didn't want to use any kind of public transport, so we walked everywhere. Yep. EVERYWHERE. Good thing they had plenty of clean stairs and benches around the city to sit on he he he...

When we first got there, it felt weird to see dilapidated old buildings side by side with newer buildings and they all had different styles. One thing that captured my eyes was the fact that there were plenty of small streets in the city centre and people could park parallel on both sides, leaving only the middle lane for one car to pass by. Here's an example:


We arrived in Budapest in the evening and R2 was really hungry, so we didn't have time to browse around for a resto. The minute we found one, we just went for it ha ha ha...It was actually rather pricey, but we enjoyed the food and the service greatly.

I ordered seafood soup: fresh shrimps, oysters, and fish (3500 HUF or around 13 Euros - in Finland it'd have cost at least 1.5 times or twice as much). Here's a pic of it (the serving was twice as much in a huge bowl so I was really full after eating it - btw, the serving bowl isn't in the pic):


Here's the cheapest food we ate in Budapest. I bought Chinese noodles plus sweet and sour chicken. R2 ordered potatoes and spicy chicken and we bought a bottle of Nestea ice tea and altogether they cost 1700 HUF (around 6.4 Euros). And you know what? The chili sauce was TERRIFIC 'coz they use FRESH chili!!! :-D

I think here are the highlights of our trip:

1. Labyrinth. It's an underground labyrinth/cave. It was VERY dark and thrilling. We deliberately went there at night so that it'd be so dark and we had to bring a lantern to circle around the caves (lanterns were provided). It cost 2000 HUF per person to get in (around 7.5 Euros) but we felt it was WORTH it. I'll write more about this in a separate post 'coz I have too many photos.

2. Gellert Hill. Had to walk up many stairs, but the view from the top of the hill was just MAGNIFICENT. :-D

3. Castle Hill. Another hilly area.

4. Opera House. The hour long guided tour cost around 2900 HUF (around 11 Euros).

5. The Free Budapest Walking Tour. We really had a nice time walking around for 2.5 hours and listening to the tour guide. I'll also write about it later on.

What's interesting is that some places have toilet codes on the receipts, so before going to a toilet, you have to buy something and then punch in the codes. Good thing we didn't throw away any receipts - otherwise we'd be in HUGE trouble. Here's an example of the receipt:

First Trip Abroad

When I was still studying at the uni, I had many emailpals 'coz I wanted to improve my English. One of them became rather close to me 'coz we shared some similarities (he's a year older than me). He then had an idea to go abroad together with me, but 'coz he knew I couldn't afford going somewhere too far, he suggested Singapore.

While studying at the uni, I had started earning money by becoming a private English tutor. Back then I only had classes from morning until around 2 pm at the latest and on some days I only had one class, so I had plenty of time to teach after 2 pm. Through word of mouth, I got more and more students as time went by, so once I graduated, I had accumulated some money for travel. It wasn't much, but enough for a 6-day trip to Singapore.

So this emailpal of mine first came to Bandung to visit me for the first time in 2000 and then we went to Singapore together. Prior to his coming to Indo, I naturally had told my parents about our wish to go to Singapore together. My Mom supported me fully, but my Dad was worried. Being a hard-headed person like me, I told my Mom that no matter what I was going to go with this emailpal of mine. So Mom (BLESS HER!!!) became the bridge between me and Dad. If I had to go talk to Dad on my own, we would have had a fight probably. Mom's the best bridge of all time between me and Dad.

For those of you westerners out there, you may wonder why it's this way, but I grew up in Asia where things are different. I lived with my parents until I moved to Finland at the age of 28 years old, so I knew my parents would also consider me as "green" when it came to my wish to go to Singapore at the age of 22 with an emailpal I had never met in real life. However, I was adamant 'coz I wanted to prove to them (and myself) that I could come back in one piece. Why? Because all my life I have been wanting to travel abroad when I have the money and opportunity and if my parents can't trust me enough to go abroad with a friend at that time, they would probably have a harder time letting me go somewhere farther on my own.

In order to appease Dad's worry at that time, I conveyed the problem to my emailpal and he understood it (he has plenty of Asian friends, so even though he's a foreigner, he understands the Asian world). He then had this idea on how he could help, so he wrote an email to my parents (in English) to introduce himself and explain why we wanted to go abroad together. He also stated that we would take good care of each other. After printing that letter out and giving it to Mom (who then gave it to Dad), we got Dad's full permission. YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYY!!! :-D I was SO thrilled!

And my closest friends also helped by telling Mom how nice my emailpal was after we spent time with him in Bandung before we went to Singapore together and of course he also dropped by our place a few times, so my Mom could meet him beforehand. I'm sorry to have to lie to my parents by telling them that we'd stay in different rooms, but I just couldn't afford staying in a different room, so we had to share a room to keep the cost low.

But anyway, nothing bad happened. We enjoyed the trip and it was really fun. We almost had a scare when going back to Indo 'coz at Singapore airport, they asked for my emailpal's return ticket from Jakarta to his home country (so the itinerary was he stayed in Indo for a week, then we went to Singapore for 6 days, then he stayed in Indo again for another week). He said he didn't bring it. Finally the Singapore official let him go back to Indo, though they warned him that he might get into trouble in Jakarta airport.

At that time we didn't understand anything about it, so we just disregarded it. Turned out that when we were going out of Jakarta airport, the official wouldn't let him go unless he either could show that he had sufficient funds in his bank account (or credit card) or show that he had the return ticket, he wouldn't let him go out of the airport.

At that time he was still working part-time and studying at the same time, so he didn't have that much money nor enough limit in the credit card. Meanwhile, I had just graduated from university, so I also didn't have any credit card nor too much money in my bank account (in fact, I used up almost all of my 4-year savings that I got from tutoring kids for the whole trip, so I was broke when we got back from Singapore).

We were confused and anxious and worried at that time, but my friend finally decided to ransack through his backpack and ta-daaaa...he FOUND the return ticket!!! He didn't even realize that he had brought it all along! If he hadn't found it, I would have probably have to go back to Bandung alone to retrieve the ticket and go back to Jakarta. Phew!!! What a mess!!!

But all's well that ends well. That trip opened up more opportunities for me to go abroad on my own - such as when I first went to Finland for the first time in 2004. :-)))) I didn't even have to convince my parents anymore 'coz they knew I could take good care of myself he he he...

Test, Rovaniemi, Jerk, Anniversary, Baby Clothes

1. The Upcoming National Finnish Test

I haven't had time to write about the YKI test (the national Finnish test). The other week I found a practice test online, including the listening test recordings. The test is still FAR beyond my ability right now, but funny thing is that the realization just throws away any kind of pressure I have on myself.

I don't know about you...but for me, when I feel that I think I may be able to do something very well, but I'm not 100% sure yet, then the pressure I feel can be SO high, but then when I know it's WAY beyond myself and yet there's no harm done in trying to do it, then I feel FREE of burdens and I can just give it my best shot and enjoy the process even more. ;-D

2. Trip to Rovaniemi.

Tomorrow hubby and I are going to take my sis-in-law and nephews to Rovaniemi for their flight to Pori. If nothing comes up, we're going to look around a bit in Rovaniemi since I hadn't really gone anywhere there except to Santa Town he he he...I'm SO glad to have a thoughtful sis-in-law who wants to show me around he he he...

The only problem is that the eldest son, who's a teenager already, doesn't want to do that ha ha ha ha...The youngest one is still eager to do things with the adults, but the teenage one...well, you know how teenagers are HA HA HA HA HA...;-D

3. Meeting A Jerk:

Today I came home and decided to bake cheese/sandwich bread, so I went back to Lidl after I found out how much ham and cheese I should buy. At Lidl, I was doing my own business as usual without noticing anybody else much...when I was near the frozen veggies section, suddenly a guy who stood around 1 metre away on my left talked to me.

I thought he was confused about something and he needed help, but when I turned around and looked at him, he suddenly came closer and put out his hand and said, "Terve" (hi) softly. Since I disliked being rude at people, I put out my hand and replied, "Terve."

Then he started becoming more confident and he started talking to me in Finnish, though I didn't understand every little word he said since he talked softly and quickly, but I managed to get "Nippon". I assumed he thought I was a Japanese, so I said to him that I was an Indonesian girl.

He looked confused when I said that. It seemed he was looking for some words, so I just kept on browsing on the frozen veggies section. I thought he would back away, but instead he came closer again and he said something which I didn't really get, but I managed to hear "vaimo" (wife). Since I got more scared about him, I immediately said, "My husband is Finnish." He looked surprised and he was laughing and nodding and he backed away.

I THOUGHT he would go away for good, but you know what he did next? OUTRAGEOUS!!! He came back after walking a few steps away and he asked me for some MONEY!!!!!!!!!!! GRRRRRRRRRR!!!!! He looked PERFECTLY healthy and young and he was asking me for MONEY?!?!?!?!?! Unbelievable!!!

After having lived in Finland for more or less a year now (I just realized that tomorrow's my 1 year anniversary), I had never come across anyone like that except in bars when some guys got drunk, but then again in the bars I am never alone, so I feel safer. Oh well...quite an experience!!!


4. One Year Anniversary in Finland Tomorrow:

Speaking of my 1 year anniversary in Finland, it's a coincidence that tomorrow we're going to Rovaniemi to do some window shopping he he he...I've always wanted to go back there anyway. And we're going to look for my mom-in-law's birthday gift there, too. Her birthday is coming soon (3 days earlier than Arttu).

5. Baby Clothes.

I've been bidding for some baby clothes from a Finnish website. I want to bring many baby clothes to Indo for my brother's baby since it'll be MUCH cheaper to bring them there myself. Plus I don't know when I'll be able to go back there to bring the clothes, so I'm going to buy them in different sizes. I'm not going to buy the smallest sizes in case the baby's born big HA HA HA HA HA...

I can't afford buying new baby clothes for them, but I'm sure they won't mind getting second hand clothes. After all, babies grow so fast and it's better to have plenty of clothes to change, right? HE HE HE HE HE...Arttu has been shaking his head since I'm a bit obsessed about finding cute second-hand clothes online HA HA HA HA HA HA HA...
