Blast from the Past: How My Parents Met

Back in my parents' generation, most Chinese parents would be agitated when their daughters became "of age" (18 years old). The parents then would start trying to find "best matches" for their daughters. That was what happened with my mom's elder sisters. It's not like they were married off to strangers, mind you. If the daughters weren't interested, then they wouldn't force the marriage, but anyway, many young girls back then were already married by the time they reached 20 years of age.

My parents were the exception. I think for dad the problem was that he was shy and he didn't come from a well-off family. After all, in a developing country where there were almost no social benefits available, the man's ability to provide for the family became an important thing, especially because back then most women became stay-at-home moms. So having "rich" parents would help a man become "more interesting" for prospective women so to speak.

In my mom's case, she was just not interested in all the men that tried to pursue her (most of them were relatives or long-distant relatives) and back then my mom had an ambition. The ambition was to save enough money to buy grandma (her own mother) a house because at that time grandma was staying with my mom's elder sister and they kept on quarreling with each other. FYI, my mom's wish came true in the end. :-D

Anyway, my parents met through a mutual friend. This woman became their "matchmaker" so to speak. Mom was 31 at that time whereas dad was 35. They dated for 6 months and then decided to get married 6 months from then. So they got married about a year after they first met. And I was born exactly 10 months to the date of their wedding day. That's why it's easy for me to remember their wedding day ha ha...

Mom told me that when she started dating dad, she warned her mother and her elders NOT to try to do some "research" on my dad's background. You see, back then if there was a prospective husband-to-be, apparently my mom's elders loved to do some research to find out where the guy lived (in Indo even until now it's normal for kids to stay with their parents until they marry - so if they're not married, it's normal for them to stay home forever if they want to), who the parents were, what the financial condition of the parents and the guy was, etc.

And I suspect that this kind of "habit" was not just limited to my mom's elders, because when we were younger, we always heard from our parents that back in their days there was this slogan "Bibit Bebet Bobot". This slogan was used in order to find the best prospective spouse-to-be. Bibit means genes, but it can also include the family background (social strata). Bebet means the spouse-to-be's circle of friends (are his friends gangsters or what?), though it also sometimes includes where he lives because sometimes where you live shows how well-off you are. Bobot means the spouse-to-be's personality and social status (job, rank, intelligence).

Back to my parents...my mom actually knew my dad's younger brother because they went to school together. One important aspect that mom said made her believe that my dad would be a suitable husband was that while they went on dates and they talked about stuff, she found out that they had similar principles, goals, and aspirations. She knew that dad would be someone who could walk together with her hand-in-hand through life's ups and downs. And those words have been etched in my mind ever since I was young. :-) Finding someone who can walk together hand-in-hand (not just literally but mentally) was also my goal in terms of finding a husband. :-)

I don't think that they started off with romance, though (not love at first sight or things like that). Considering their ages, it was more of a sensible option, I suppose, though I'm sure love and romance grew from there. One of my fave memories of them is hearing them laugh and giggle like crazy until it got hard to breathe and mom said that she was afraid of peeing in her pants - you know the kind of laughter that started and then subdued for a few seconds but then it started again and again and again (this happened a few times: sometimes behind closed door, sometimes while they were both watching TV).

My parents had a double wedding parties in two different places. Back then the cost of a wedding isn't as crazy as these days, so my dad had a wedding party where he invited all his relatives and friends in one place and after that my mom had hers where he invited all her relatives and friends. That way each of them could have a wedding that they wanted in two different places and invited whomever they wanted to invite he he...Such a tiring day, wouldn't you say? I loved looking at their wedding albums, though. :-)

Back then (few hundred) guests brought gifts instead of money for the newlyweds, so you can imagine that on their wedding night, they spent the whole night opening all the gifts and reading all the cards ha ha ha ha ha...and because they received plenty of similar gifts (lots of clocks and kitchen sets), they saved some of them to give to other newlyweds later on so that they didn't have to buy anything else LOL!!!

Oh, before I forgot...I think one other reason why they expedited their wedding was because my dad's brother had been in a relationship for a few years already by the time my parents met and he didn't want to get married before my dad got married. And due to the amount of guests invited per wedding, in Indo it's usually considered "bad" if two siblings get married the same year, because it means that the guests will have to shell out some money again to the same family the same year (it'll be sort of a burden for them 'coz after all, it's normal in Indo to get lots of wedding invitations every year, esp. if you know so many people and you have lots of relatives and friends). So my dad's younger bro got married a year after my parents got married.

OK, I got carried away and told you about their wedding, even though this post was supposed to be only about how they met HA HA HA HA HA HA...never mind then! :-D

6. God's PERFECT timing. Upon reviewing my past, now I understand more why He wanted me to wait and wait and wait. Some things in the past that were as clear as mud have become crystal clear now and I'm THANKFUL for His open and closed doors and for His temporary blocked doors.

7. Talking to my Mom via Skype again. I always HAVE FUN talking to her, listening to her stories of my relatives so that I know how they're doing these days. ;-D And hearing her say that she'd stock up some of my fave food prior to my visiting Indo made me SO HAPPY HE HE HE HE HE HE...

And the fact that she supported my wish to go to Singapore (if we have enough money) even though that meant that I'd be having less time to be with them meant THE WORLD to me. She's always SO supportive!!!

8. Meeting an old friend in YM and being able to chat with her for a long time. WHOOOPPPEEEEEEEEEEEE!!! I truly missed talking to her as she'd been too busy to catch up via emails, so that was really a WONDERFUL opportunity to catch up with her. ;-D

9. Took a nap for 2,5 hours yesterday. Boy, I definitely needed that!!! Having PMS makes me feel tired so easily. (Unfortunately, just like the image below, I also drool while sleeping LOL LOL LOL!!! But I have no shame in admitting it hi hi hi...)

10. Peace of mind, a nice bed, a nice apartment (albeit slightly dusty due to my laziness HA HA HA HA HA), health, and a funny, wacky, loving husband who ALWAYS makes me laugh (even when he's not trying to do so HA HA HA HA HA HA HA...)

A Date with A Russian Friend

Yesterday my Brit friend sent me an email, telling me that our mutual Russian friend in our Finnish class called her to ask her to meet for a cup of coffee, but my Brit friend was so busy, so she asked me if I wanted to meet her. I said yes, so she gave me her phone number. I called my Russian friend this morning to ask her if she had any plans. She was excited to meet me somewhere downtown. I had to cook and stuff before I could go, so we arranged to meet in a cafe at 2 pm.

It was -9'C when I went out. Arttu had left for Rovaniemi already at midday. He and his coworkers and boss had lunch at a restaurant downtown before going to Rovaniemi. I don't even know when he's going to come back home tomorrow he he he...My guess is after midday. ;-D

Anyway, while walking to the cafe, I noticed an old lady sitting down on top of 20-cm snow. When I walked closer to her, she said, "Liukas" (slippery), so I tried to help her get up, but it wasn't easy 'coz she didn't seem to have enough strength to pull herself up by holding my hand. GLADLY there was a man and his daughter right behind me and he was strong enough to pull her up to her feet by holding her from below her armpits. They talked pretty fast in Finnish that I didn't understand except for "Kiitos" (thank you), so I left them be. When I turned around, the man was walking her home he he he...I think it was such a NICE gesture, don't you think so? He wanted to make sure that she got home safely.

I continued walking and my Russian friend bought me some coffee. Then we sat and talked for about an hour he he he...She said that she had been living here for 3.5 years, but she hadn't made too many friends, especially during the first year. For some reason, her husband didn't want her to work, but she got lonely staying at home with her daughter all the time. She said she needed a car to be able to go around this village easily. Plus she's 7 months' pregnant now (her daughter's 2 years old), so it'll be VERY hard on her to get around this village once the second child is born.

For some other reason, her husband doesn't let her use their internet connection at home. She has a laptop, but she can only get online whenever she comes back to Russia (she comes back to Russia every month). I think I'll go nuts without the internet he he he he...

After a while, she said that she was going to meet her Russian friend who worked in the nearby toy store, so I walked with her to that store since it was on my way home. Her daughter had been SO good while we were talking at the cafe. She didn't cry, she didn't get cranky or anything...she walked around the place or just sat down while chewing some pie. However, when my friend was about to put her in this snow sled (I don't actually know the term for this kind of sled-like seat made of plastic with a rope around it where you can pull), the daughter refused to sit there. She cried and even while she dragged her to walk with her, she refused. She carried her for a while, but then she let her down again as she was 7 months' pregnant, but still her daughter refused to go. She even lay down on the pavement which was covered by snow, can you believe it?

Tsk tsk tsk...She said her husband asked her why they didn't go out every day. She said to him, "Why don't you try just once to go out with her alone without me? Then you'll understand how tough it is." He he he he he he...Finally she carried her daughter again and we arrived at the store and we parted.

All in all, it was a GREAT date. We talked about lots of stuff and she invited me to her house he he he...I want to visit her house just as long as it's not too cold outside. It was freezing when I walked home. I checked on the temperature and it's now down to -10'C. I bought a pair of angora shorts the other day from Lidl 'coz my butt and belly get cold so easily. When I walked home, my face was half-frozen stiff. Yikes!!! I can't imagine how cold it's gonna be when it's -35.5'C outside or even worse than that!!! Maybe next time I should bring my scarf to wrap around my face. Yeah...that's a good idea! ;-D

My Brit friend told me about a Christmas fair tomorrow. I don't know yet whether I'm going there or not. I want to go there, but if it's too cold, I may pass he he he he he...Although I'm actually kinda curious about what it's going to be like. Hmmmm...if I'm going there, better take my digicam with me. ;-D

First Wedding Anniversary: Starry, Starry Night!

Venue: My parents-in-laws' cabin. No electricity. We lit the fireplace, some candles, and an oil lamp. Dates: November 2nd - 3rd, 2007. Occasion: First Wedding Anniversary.

Food: Hamburger and sausages, cooked in the fireplace.

Drinks: Cold cider and plain water.

Music: Anything the radio played that night.

Temperature: Around -5'C to -9'C. (I got out a few times to pee in the outdoor toilet)

Bonuses: A box of Praline chocolate, a VERY starry night sky, and a crescent.

Note: It was an AWESOME sight! The cabin was located far away from city lights so the stars were prominent in the sky. I didn't know that the stars could be seen even very low above the horizon. There were literally tens of thousands or probably a million stars that I could see everywhere I turned!!! Gosh!!! I almost wanted to throw a sleeping bag on the ground and just camp there under the stars he he he...

Magical Moments:

1. Hubby gazed at me for a LONG time as though he was looking at me for the first time, with lovey-dovey eyes. Mmmmm...*drool*

2. Se on salaisuus. It's a secret. *wink* Too personal to tell here HE HE HE HE HE HE HE HE HE HE HE HE HE HE HE HE HE HE HE HE HE HE HE...

3. Having enough quality time with my hubby. We talked about our rough plans for the future. I just wanted to make sure that we were on the same track. We also talked about the past, about last year's wedding and honeymoon. We both agree that this year is DEFINITELY MUCH better than last year. ;-D

4. Gazing at the stars whenever I came out to pee in the outdoor toilet. Mmmmh...I kept on turning my head round and round and round and there was no spot in the sky that wasn't covered by the stars. Amazing!!! Then when I came out the second time, I saw a crescent in the sky along with the stars. My, my, my!!!

5. My mother-in-law has already planned to give me something for my upcoming birthday on November 29th. BLESS HER HEART!!!! How can I not love that woman? ;-D She was going to give me some money for a haircut he he he...Hubby helped me explain to her that I wasn't planning on cutting my hair yet as I wanted long hair to help warm up my ears during winter. ;-D

6.
Receiving so many anniversary well-wishes from family, friends, blogger friends. ;-D

Here are some pics:

We arrived at the cabin at around 9 pm. We arrived in Kelujärvi already at 6 pm, but then Arttu had to go to the cabin first to warm it up. He got back after a while and then we played some cards after drinking coffee and eating some buns (we = me, Arttu, and my mother-in-law). The sky DID look GORGEOUS like that in the morning (I took the first pic at around 7.20 am).

The below pic was taken right when we arrived at the cabin. It was pitch dark already by then.

Ta-daaaa....here I am eating sausage ha ha ha ha ha ha...

The below pic was taken at around 7 am. It was so foggy.

This crescent pic isn't too clear. Next time I'd better bring my tripod 'coz there are just some things I can't capture well without it.

The sun was shining brightly at around 10 am. We were preparing to leave the cabin to go back to my in-laws' place to enjoy breakfast there.

Me posing in front of the semi-frozen lake in front of the cabin he he...

This is the inside of the cabin. Yes, we had to cram ourselves by sleeping on that single bed he he he he he...Right on to the right side is a long table, then you can see the two single beds, and two fireplaces on the left side. The open fireplace is no longer used.

The below pic was taken in summer. I posted it here so you can see the other side of the cabin. Yeah, as you can see, one of my most fave spots on earth is Arttu's lap he he he he he he...

Arttu had to scrape ice layer from our car windows. Our car was covered by a thin layer of ice.

This below video isn't too clear, but you can at least see what we did with the burger steaks ha ha ha ha ha...
