35th Birthday

Today is my 35th birthday. When I woke up, I was greeted by the gorgeous pink sky outside as the sun was starting to rise (yeah, I woke up late because today was my free day LOL!!!).

Today I just want to be thankful for these things:

- For this breath that I still have. The gift of life. 

- My husband. When I was preparing to marry him, I thought that I was sure that he was the one for me. What I knew then deep down in my heart versus what I know now shows me that my choice was right - my faith in us back then was blind, but now I've seen the proofs and what I see is far more beautiful than what I could have known then. The longer I live with him, the surer I am that he is definitely the one for me and the more thankful I am to have him by my side. Just by being himself, he makes me feel like I'm the best version of myself. He helps me be the best version of myself. And it helps a lot to be accepted and loved just the way I am - even when I'm cranky, even when I make mistakes, even when I'm obsessed with some things, even when I'm having my PMS. 

Honey, marrying you is one of the BEST decisions ever in my entire life. Each day spent with you is a day full of fun, laughter, love, and tenderness. I just hope and pray that God will keep us hand-in-hand and heart-to-heart until death do us part - and I hope that He will give us plenty of time together still on earth because I want to grow old and I want to grow together with you. I cherish you and I still want you even after all these years.

- My parents. For letting me make my own mistakes, for trusting me to make my own decisions, for never nagging me to come visit, for never making me feel guilty for anything (either deliberately or not), for loving me without choking the life out of me, for letting me be my own person and letting me choose my own path.

- My mother-in-law. Thank you for accepting me into the family with such warmth and love, for teaching me things tenderly and patiently, for never criticizing me, for supporting me and for your constant appreciation. I couldn't have asked for a better mother-in-law.

- Friends - old ones, new ones, online friends. I'd especially like to thank my blogger friends and new online friends here. Even though most of us have never met, but you've supported me and showed me your love and compassion and I'm very thankful for that. And all the friends I've met either online or in real life have taught me so many things and inspired me in many different ways.

- My boss and coworkers. Thankful that I'm accepted in the team without being treated differently, that I still have a job despite the tough economy. 

- My kind customers. I've talked to some people about this and they all confirmed that there are so many nice and kind customers here in this village and I'm thankful for that. When I first started work, I made so many mistakes, but none of them said anything harsh to me. They reminded me of my mistakes tenderly and over time they've forgiven my other mistakes and they have also shown appreciation towards me and I'm forever grateful for that. 

- Infertility. Infertility has taught me so many things that I wouldn't have learned otherwise and it has also allowed me to meet so many lovely ladies that I wouldn't have met otherwise. I'm thankful for the many lessons and the gift of new friends that infertility brings.

Another Christmas Overview

Our Christmas went peacefully as usual. This year because I didn't have to work, we managed to do some trips before enjoying our time together at MIL's place. On Christmas eve, we picked up MIL to go visit the graves. We lit some candles (we went to two different graveyards where they had MIL's parents' graves as well as FIL's parents' graves),

It was -20'C that day and the sky had some pinkish colour at around 1 pm. Here are two views:

 

Then we went to visit FIL at the old people's home. He had just had lunch and he was given some coffee and joulutorttu in the kitchen.We gave him some Christmas gifts and then after we moved him to bed, he went to sleep right away, so we left and visited MIL's elder half-sister (who's also her very close friend). We gave her some chocolate and then we went back to MIL's place because BIL and SIL had promised to come at around 4 pm.We had the traditional Christmas food in Finland and then played some cards, but BIL and SIL had to leave earlier because they were going to spend Christmas with SIL's side of the family. 

MIL had asked me to buy some red wine, so I bought a bottle of French red wine, though I wasn't really sure if it was good or not because when I went to the store, there were SO many different types with different explanations, so I just chose one of them ha ha...R2 said that it wasn't too bad, but it wasn't too good, either ha ha ha...I only tasted a little 'coz I'm afraid of the rash happening again like what happened on my first Christmas in Finland.  

Anyway, after sauna we opened our gifts and R2 did get tricked!!! He thought I only gave him one gift, but I had hidden the second one in my bag. He opened the gift and thought that he only got a Donald Duck book. Only after that I gave him the second gift, which was his actual gift: a computer game he he he...He's been gaming it ever since we came back home! :-D

We stayed up late playing cards (not as late as the previous years, though! I guess we're getting older and we get tired more easily LOOOOOLLLL!!!) and then I had fun watching three squirrels chasing one another outside of MIL's apartment. They were SO cute!!!

Here's a pic of one of them. It was so dark outside already so it was hard to get a good pic. Thus I had to tamper with the pic and turned it into sepia mode:

And on Christmas day I saw a punatulkku (bullfinch) among the trees. It was SO vivid due to its red colour among the whiteness of snow. Here's a pic of it...I also had to tamper with the pic to make it brighter. Otherwise it'd look so dark.

Before Christmas I tried taking pics of natural snowflake forms on my bike, but it was SO hard. I just want to show you that when the temperature is colder and it snows, the snowflakes retain their original forms for a while when they land on non-warm spots (like this pic I took of my bike bag). It isn't the best pic (again the darkness didn't help me capture the snowflake form as well as I could), but I suppose this should do...

OK, enough for now. I'm now busy working again until New Year's eve, so not too much time to relax until then he he...

Brain Age Test + Ken

A friend of mine sent us a link to this fun Brain Age Test and ever since then I had been looking for brain games to play with 'coz I've been having free days from work he he he...

HA HA HA HA...Yeah, I sucked in doing two of the tests, namely the word test and also "find the difference" test. But anyway, I had fun in doing the test and nobody else should know your result, so don't worry about that ha ha...

Today I picked up a package for Ken (my bro's son). SO EXCITED!!! I've been buying things for him ever since last year, so he'll be getting more gifts from me than the others he he...I bet the others won't be jealous, though, 'coz Ken needs as much stimulation as he can gets to improve his brain power.

He'll turn 3 years old next October and he know his alphabet already. He can count up to (at least) 20 in Indonesian and he can count up to 12 in English. He recognizes letters in words, though he can't spell words yet (but my Mom's slowly teaching him to spell).

The last time I met him, he couldn't talk yet (13 months old) and he was just starting to walk on his own. Now his vocabulary has grown A LOT. He can sing many songs from the beginning until the end without help. Overall he's been a joy for my parents as well as his own parents (my bro and SIL). Can't wait to meet him again. WHOOOOPPPPEEEE!!! I LOVE counting down to going back to Indo he he he...

3BT: Random Days

1. Making a decision after thinking about it for a few days and knowing deep in my heart that it's the right call.

2. R2 is unwell now, which is "good" in a way 'coz then when my friends come here for a visit, he is well enough to drive to Rovaniemi to pick them up. Now I only need to hope that I won't catch the viruses 'coz it's been spreading around the village (one coworker is sick and another one started coughing yesterday).

3. FIL has stopped asking MIL, "When's your holiday ending? When are you taking me back home?" and thus MIL can now stop feeling guilty. In fact, when she took her back home for a few hours, he said that he wanted to go back home (to the nursing house).

4. I bought a tiger roll that I had never tried before the other day and it smells and tastes SO good!!!

5. Excitement 'coz my friends are coming for a visit soon (in 10 days). Can't wait to meet them!!! Haven't seen them in about 4 years. ;-D

6. Rubbing R2's cold hands to make them warm and seeing gratitude in his sweet smile. He's such a babe!!! :-D

7. Some of my fave TV series are coming back soon (Good Wife, Criminal Minds). YIIIIHHHHAAAAA!!!!

8. Buying some gifts for my loved ones and also souvenirs for my friends (grateful that I have the money to buy them). :-D

9. The weather's stopped being too hot (the other week it was 31'C three days in a row - which was unusual 'coz usually it only lasted for a day - and we don't have any fan or aircon, so it was really stuffy inside and it was hard to sleep well at nights).

10. Finding a funny manga about a teacher and being able to laugh out loud.

11. Recreating the kind of food that my Mom used to make us. Brings me straight back to the kitchen when she prepared the food for us. :-D

Christmas Highlights

I was SO SO HAPPY this Christmas due to several reasons HUE HE HE HE HE HE HE HE...

1. I managed to trick R2. How? Well, when I started browsing for a gift for him, I didn't know what to buy. I accidentally found a new novel written by his fave author (a translated novel, that is - though his English is good, he prefers reading novels in Finnish). Being broke (after my trip to Indo and after booking for the plane tickets to Helsinki), I couldn't buy more than one gift, BUT I HAD to disguise the book so that he wouldn't know it was a book, right?

So after I sold plenty of empty beer bottles/cans (leftover from my training in the hotel which I hadn't sold yet), I used that money to buy some packets of salmiakki. So I bundled all of them into one gift that had such an irregular shape that R2 wouldn't have known what was inside HO HO HO HO HO HO HO HO HO HO...

When it was time to open the gift, he took out one packet of salmiakki first from the wrapper and then another one and another one. Then he took out the book last. By then his smile became wider HA HA HA HA...After opening the book wrapper, he said, "This is JUST what I wished I would get!"

HUE HE HE HE HE HE HE HE HE HE HE HE HE HE HE HE HE...BINGO!!!

2. MIL obviously wasn't expecting anything, but we got her a new computer HD and a lamb-shaped neck pillow. She wanted to pay for the HD, can you believe it? Of course R2 said NO!!! HE HE HE...And when she opened the neck pillow box, she shrieked, "AHHHHHH how did you know???" Then she hugged it and smiled so brightly he he he he he he...

3. The winter pants I ordered for FIL fit well!!! :-D I knew he needed a pair 'coz MIL mentioned it once, but I wasn't sure whether or not they had bought a new pair - when the gift was opened, MIL said, "This is just what he needs. I told him that we'd buy him a new pair of winter pants when the shops start selling everything on sale and now we don't have to buy them anymore." HE HE HE HE HE HE HE HE...

4. I was craving for Bailey's Irish Cream (chocolate mint flavour - thanks to the incessant ad campaigns on TV), so I told R2 about this. On 23rd, I went out to buy it and without my knowledge, R2 had bought a bottle, too! Oh dear he he he...So we brought one bottle to my in-laws' place and shared it with MIL and FIL (BIL didn't stay there 'coz he continued the party at his girlfriend's parents' place) and now we still have a bottle at home - we can drink it later on New Year's Eve HO HO HO HO HO HO...

5. Bought a bouquet of flowers for in-laws' 47th wedding anniversary (if I had written here about this, I had miscalculated I think - 'coz I thought it was their 48th anniversary ha ha...). Anyway, they got married on December 26th.


What do I get? It's a secret HA HA HA HA HA HA...ahem...anyway, now time for me to call my parents 'coz today's my Dad's birthday. ;-D I'll blog-hop sometime later...

Girls' Day + Ken

Soon enough after lunch I'm going to walk to my friend's house and stay there until R2 picks me up since it's pretty cold out there hi hi hi...And in the evening I'll go visit another friend HUA HA HA HA HA HA HA...

Since tomorrow as usual I'll go to Kelujärvi, I'm afraid I'll be MIA until Saturday night or Sunday morning. After all, this is my last weekend of freedom before my training starts. What are you doing this weekend, people?????? Have a BLESSED weekend, friends!!!

This morning when I checked my mailbox, found several pics of Ken from my brother. YIIIHAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!! Here are some of them...








I'm never good at deciding whether a baby looks more like the dad or the mom, so what do you think? Does Ken look more like my bro or Shen? Or is it too early to tell? HE HE HE HE HE...

Two days ago I called Mom and Shen picked up the phone. After hearing stories about Ken from her and Mom, I think Ken's such a strong boy. I'm GLAD to hear that he's healthy. Funny thing is that the doctor says that he doesn't cry enough, so when they visited the doctor, he told them to let him cry for a minute HE HE HE HE HE HE...

Well, as is the tradition in Indonesia, both my bro and Ken are going to give some cake to all the people who've given them gifts for Ken. Guess how many cakes they are ordering? 260!!! Yes, you read it right!!!

I can't imagine how crazy it'll be for them. That's why they decide to separate the cake-sending-process into THREE days and they'll ask some cousins' help to do that. My bro even takes some days off from work due to this reason he he he he he...but the good news is that Shen says that probably they don't need to buy clothes for Ken until he's 4 or 5 years old HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA...

Now you understand why they had 700 wedding guests, right? Each of them have MANY friends and both families are BIG families and they have MANY church friends, too. Tsk tsk tsk tsk tsk...I'm GLAD they're happy and healthy, though. ;-D

P.S. Upon seeing the pics, without realizing it, I started talking to Ken's pictures as if he were right in front of me HUA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA...

My First White Christmas Story Part 1

Yellow, everybody! I'm bacccckkkk...how was your Christmas? Mine was FABULOUS except for one little fact: RASHES attacked me, but I'm getting too far ahead of the story he he he...let me start from the beginning.

Sunday, Dec 23rd, 2007

We went to Elvi's house. Elvi is my mother-in-law's eldest sister. She had her 76th b-day on Saturday, but hubby was too tired to visit her then. We bought a pot of flowers for her and we also brought her Christmas gift. I gave her a nice brooch and two identical mugs with the pic of Santa on them (cartoonish pic). She greeted as as usual, very cheerfully and gave us hugs. She gave more hugs and a kiss on my cheek after she opened her gifts. Yeah, she opened her Christmas gift right then and there as well. I noticed so many different pots of flowers in her house already. There must've been other people giving her flowers, as well ha ha ha ha...Gladly we didn't give the exact kind of flower like the rest we found there.

As usual she served us coffee and some buns. Before we went home, I asked hubby to take a pic of me and her and here it is:



Yep, she grabbed me like that right away. She's very sanguine and not a typical Finn, I guess. She talks a lot animatedly and she's always so bubbly. She also gives LOTS of hugs to everybody he he he he he he...

After that we stopped by at her son's house (Pirita's Dad, Arttu's closest friend who sometimes has game nights with him) to fix something in his computer. There he showed us his Christmas tree. He just got the tree the other day since his brother told him to come over to get it from his land.



Monday: Dec 24th, 2007

In the morning Arttu and I went to two different cemeteries. Lots of people go to these cemeteries to light candles in front of their loved ones' graves. Let me show you some pics.

The first cemetery we went to was the place where my mother-in-law's parents' graves were located.



This is another view of the cemetery: as you can see they even put and decorate a Christmas tree there! Nice! ;-D




Then we went to a second cemetery (the one I've been to last summer, though I couldn't find their graves). These are the graves of my father-in-law's parents. Somebody's put some roses there, though I don't know who did it.




I couldn't resist taking this pic since there were SO MANY candles there!!!!!!!!!



After we visited the cemeteries, we went straight to my in-laws and right away we started working he he he he he...Arttu had to take out all the carpets and dust them whereas I cleaned up the floors with a vacuum cleaner and then I mopped them. Then we put the carpets back inside and then my mother-in-law asked Arttu to change the curtains and I helped her change the table cloth to make it more "festive", I guess. Then we had lunch afterward since we were sweating already and we got hungry after doing the work he he he he...We had boiled potatoes and moose and salad. ;-D

Not long after that, Arttu's second brother and girlfriend dropped by and had some lunch, too. They didn't stay until evening, though, since I guess they were celebrating Christmas Eve with the girlfriend's family. He gave us a bag of presents (from him and girlfriend and the other one was from Arttu's eldest brother and family). Gee...we didn't even get Arttu's eldest brother and family anything but a postcard. Oops!!! Better do it next year, then. I suppose it's too late this year anyway he he he...We gave Arttu's second brother his gift then, but he didn't open it right away.

My problem started right after sauna. During HOT HOT HOT sauna, I got thirsty and I drank cider. This time the cider had 4.7% alcohol in it and I gulped it until more than half of the can, but I felt fine. I wasn't drunk at all. No headache whatsoever. BUTTTTT I started having rashes along the underside of my arms and they started being itchy. I tried not to scratch them, but I only rubbed them to get rid of the itch. Anyway, my mother-in-law played cards with us for a while. In the first game, Arttu won by 1 point from me. ARRRGGHHH!!!! In the second game, I lost since I got pretty lousy cards again and again he he he...

After that, we started serving dinner. The traditional X-mas dinner here is joulukinkku (pork ham leg). Here's a pic I took when Arttu was slicing it and taking away the fat:



It was such a HUGE pork ham leg!!!! ;-D



Then we ate it with boiled potatoes, salad, beet, and everything else. Mother-in-law took out a bottle of red wine so that we could toast using it. I only took two sips of it, but I guess it made my condition worse during the night. My rashes started spreading to the back of my legs and butt and eventually even spread to my back and the front of my legs. YARGH!!! Anyway, here're pics of the festive dinner table he he he...





After dinner, we cleared up the table and then took out our presents to open in front of one another. Arttu gave me a new mobile phone and a very warm and soft blanket (I LOVE the colours of the blanket!). My in-laws gave us a big candle, a cooking pan, and some chocolate. We got them a pair of warm long johns (top and bottom), a smoke detector, a kitchen tool, and the photo album I made for them. At first my mother-in-law thought that the photo album was just a blank photo album, but when she looked at the first page, she realized it wasn't a blank photo album HA HA HA HA...

Funny thing was that she didn't recognize the first flower I put there. I took a close-up pic of the flower, so to her it looked different. Finally after a while she did remember it, though. She had fun looking at the pics and trying to remember the occasion hi hi hi hi hi hi hi...Then she showed the album to my father-in-law. ;-D

We got some nice glasses and also some candles from Arttu's brothers. Arttu opened his gift from me and realized that it wasn't what he thought it was. YAAAAAAAAAAAAYYY!!! I gave him a pair of new jeans and he thought that the gift was a shirt HUA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA...I WIIIIIIIIIIIINNNNNNN!!!! I asked him to try them on since I was apprehensive that they wouldn't fit, but they did fit perfectly. YEEEESSS!!!! ;-D

After that we finally went to sleep, but I couldn't really sleep since my rashes started getting SO itchy. I brought some salve there, but it didn't really help. I went back and forth to the toilet to rub more salve, but the itch was there. Finally I was at my wit's end, so I decided to try rubbing some olive oil to the rashes and it worked...if only for 15 minutes at a time. The olive oil soothed my rashes for 15 minutes, then I had to go rub it all over again. But after rubbing it for three or four times, I could finally drift off to sleep. Arttu had a restless sleep, as well, since I kept on waking up. It was a VERY rough night for me and we finally woke up at around 10.30 am or 11 am. Yet still I was SO tired then due to my rashes.

I NEVER had any allergy toward anything before in my life and that was HORRIBLE! I can't imagine how people who suffer from allergy to many things live. I almost wanted to rip my skin off due to the itch. Plus the red patches also felt SO HOT that during the night, I had to move my blanket away from me. Only then I realized the suffering of those people who've experienced the same thing. Nothing beats experience indeed!!!!

OK, let me just post this and I'll continue the story later. I have to write down all the important details in my old mobile before I put the SIM card to my new mobile he he he...

Additional note: Don't worry. My rashes are getting MUCH better now and I hope they're gone tomorrow. But if they don't, then I'll go to the doctor tomorrow. Here in Finland the official Christmas holiday is until today, so nothing is open out there until tomorrow he he he he he...

After I got back home, I did some research on allergy and found out that Asians have a genetic disorder that makes their bodies unable to break down ingested alcohol completely. Ahhhh...no wonder...and some sites say that sometimes it's not because of allergy to alcohol itself, but to some ingredients in alcoholic drinks. I must say that from now on I dare not drink any more alcoholic drinks. Too scary! My body skin yesterday looked SO scary, you know??? But what really bothered me was the itch and the hot feeling all over the rashes. YIKES!!!

3BT: December 23, 2007

1. I just got a SURPRISE gift (and will get another one later) from my Brit friend. She sent me a voucher for Skype Out 'coz she knows I use Skype to call my parents.

I TRULY TRULY ABSOLUTELY appreciate this!!! Plus she said she had ordered something for me that would come much later. Oh dear...so many gifts!!!!! I'm TRULY BLESSED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My cup RUNNETH OVER!!!

2. Arttu's cousin (Pirita's Dad) gave us a Christmas gift (a bottle of whisky HA HA HA) along with a cute X-mas card (chosen by Pirita he he he...).

3. Went to visit my mother-in-law's elder sister to give her a birthday gift and a Christmas gift and got three tight hugs and a kiss on the cheek HE HE HE HE...Plus I got two Christmas candles from her HUE HE HE HE HE HE HE...

4. I'm feeling ON TOP OF THE WORLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOOOHOOOOOOOO!!!! I can't wait to go to Kelujärvi tomorrow to celebrate Christmas with my in-laws!!!!!

Our Own Pikkujoulu!!!!!!!!!!

Today in our Finnish class, our teacher suggested us to meet sometime in a cafe prior to Christmas. It's going to be LOVELY!!!

I got my homework correction today and the teacher said I had done well for someone who'd only been here for 8 months. I was SO glad to hear it, 'coz I felt as though my progress had been too slow he he he he he...What's really crystal clear now is that I haven't really practiced speaking much. Since I don't meet too many people, I don't use much Finnish even though I probably know more Finnish grammar than some of my classmates. One thing for sure is that I'm going to force myself to practice more speaking. Maybe I should start it with my own hubby. Actually lately I've been trying to say some short sentences in Finnish. I should keep on doing that so that I don't need too much time to formulate those words in my head and that it'll become some sort of an automatic response. Yeah, worth trying! ;-D

I can't wait for the pikkujoulu party (a small pre-Christmas celebration). My Brit friend is the one who's going to organize it. I sure hope everybody can make it, though I'm not sure the boys are going to come with us (boys = my Brit friend's husband and eldest son). I guess it's going to be an all ladies eve he he he he...We haven't decided on a date yet, but it should be before December 17th since one of our Russian friends is going to visit her hometown again that day.

Gave my teacher a Christmas gift and she was SO happy to get it HE HE HE HE HE HE HE...She said she'd only open it on Christmas Eve (the habit here is to open gifts on Christmas Eve). I also gave something for my Brit friend, who totally didn't expect it. WA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA...I LOVE IT when I can surprise people in a nice way!!! *big grin* Those gifts weren't expensive, but it's the thought that counts, right????? RIGHT? You MUST agree with me. LOL LOL!!!

Ahem...when I got back home from my Finnish class, I noticed that hubby had wrapped my birthday present nicely. It's now sitting on top of our scanner/printer. I've decided not to touch it or go near it he he he he...

See, Fish, I can still control myself HE HE HE HE HE...I want to be surprised tomorrow. I don't wanna touch it and then wonder what it is and obsess over it during the night he he he he he...

Okie dokie...now let me spend some quality time with hubby he he he...Enjoy the rest of your day, everybodyyyyy!!! I'll surely enjoy mine THOROUGHLY, knowing that tomorrow I can open that mysterrriiouuussss package ha ha ha ha ha...

By the way, I had a funny conversation with my hubby earlier when he got back home from work.

Today's shopping day for me. Yeah, I splurged a bit but I think I deserve to pamper myself every once in a while. Plus, it's my money anyway and I've been pretty good in budgeting myself lately he he he he he...

1. Bought small gifts for my Finnish teacher (X-mas gift) and a friend of mine who's gonna be helping me. She's coming home to Indo next March, so I'm sending her a few photo CDs and some clothes for my family. YIIPPPIIIIEEEEEEEEEE!!!!

2. Bought a pair of new winter trousers for me (€20). They're actually in the boys' section, but I don't care as long as they fit me well and they're not too expensive ha ha ha ha...

3. Found a CUTE Santa statue (for decoration) which cost only €0.40. I almost couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the price, so I grabbed it right away tightly in my arms so that nobody could take it HI HI HI HI HI HI...When I got home, I realized that the old price label was below the new one and it should've cost €1.50. YIIIIIIIIIHHHHHHHHAAAA!!! I'll take a pic of it later on and post it in another post, OK? ;-D

4. Hubby's home already (napping) 'coz he started the day earlier to go to another town to do some work there. He had to wake up at 5 am this morning. YIKES!!! Poor dear...but I'm glad he can come home earlier. Later on I think we're gonna be watching something together. I LOVE it when we watch movies together 'coz we'd be holding hands throughout the movie even though most of the times our other hands are busy with popcorn or chips or chocolate ha ha ha ha ha...LOVE holding hands with him!!! SO YUMMY!!!! Sometimes when I wanna get up to pee, he wouldn't let me go and I LOVE it, too he he he he...Ahem...Sweet, sweet, sweet!!! ;-D
